Triple Crown coming up

Postby Patchez » Thu Apr 26, 2012 3:03 pm

So it's that time of the year for me to ritually go to the track over a five week period and loose a ridiculous amount of money playing those ponies.

Anyone else do this? How do you pick your horses?

I usually pick the horse that is ridden and trained by a good combo. Proven teams with winning records. Pletcher/Gomez comes to mind. They always seem to put together a pretty good effort.

Baffert/ Desormeaux also always seem to put a strong showing together. Of course, being semi local to Pimlico Kent is a favorite jockey since I have seen him ride from his early days.

Yeah, Todd Pletchers horses seem to do well unless I bet on em. I just go by the horses name anymore.

If i drank any Crown, it'd be coming up.

I take into account a few things: The jockey, the way the horse looks coming toward the gate, past results, age

This year the KD is on Cinco de Mayo. Should I drink Margaritas or Mint Juleps?

The quandry remains. I have two little ones to care for, so I only get one or two of one or the other. No mixing on Saturday.

This is a very troubling issue. Mike and I will be at a conference in AZ for 4 days. Saturday has the longest schedule of lectures/classes. Afterwards there is a period of "open bar" at the hotel and drinks after paid for by our vendor reps. Of course we have people from AZ, TX and KY that will be there. And all the top people of the corporation. Once the bourbon and tequila start their journey, I can see possiblities of firings or jail. I'm sure someone will find it suddenly appropriate after 12 or so free drinks (strong ones at that-this place pours heavy) to tell the CEO what they really think.

I'm sticking with the beer.

Back to the race. Here's how the draw played out.

1. Daddy Long Legs
2. Optimizer
3. Take Charge Indy
4. Union Rags
5. Dullahan
6. Bodemeister
7. Rousing Sermon
8. Creative Cause
9. Trinniberg
10. Daddy Knows Best
11. Alpha
12. Perspective
13. Went The Day Well
14. Hansen
15. Gemologist
16. El Padrino
17. Done Talking
18. Sabercat
19. I'll Have Another
20. Liaison

I'm looking at a decent value on Dullahan with Desourmeaux on board. Another great valur horse for me is Hansen, without being pressurred and pinned on the rail.

I like I'LL HAVE ANOTHER, too

I randomly drew UNION RAGS in my Work Pool.

I'm looking to do some stuff with UNION RAGS and I'LL HAVE ANOTHER but I want to look at ROUSING SERMON and DULLAHAN, too. I just don't see BODEMEISTER or HANSON lasting it out. Maybe HANSON in the Preakness, but ...

And what about TAKE CHARGE INDY with Borel on board? C'mon, man, he owns this race

I might also do a bullshit $1 trifecta box of 5-10-12 for my son's projected Due Date

From the great The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved:

In the air-conditioned lounge I met a man from Houston who said his name was something or other--"but just call me Jimbo"--and he was here to get it on. "I'm ready for anything, by God! Anything at all. Yeah, what are you drinkin?" I ordered a Margarita with ice, but he wouldn't hear of it: "Naw, naw...what the hell kind of drink is that for Kentucky Derby time? What's wrong with you, boy?" He grinned and winked at the bartender. "Goddam, we gotta educate this boy. Get him some good whiskey..."
Shine your light, move it on, you burn so bright, roll on John.

One day I will have the time and the cash to actually go to every race of the triple crown. I'm only an hour and a half north of Baltimore so I've made the Preakness infield madness 6 times now. I likely won't go again cause you're not allowed to bring your own coolers into the infield anymore.

Still my bucket list contains a line for all of 'em in the same year.
