OMG my computer is on life support

Postby Savage » Sat Mar 17, 2012 12:44 am

I paid some guy $132.00 to fix my sick pride and joy, and it still wasn't behaving. I got it running tonight, from sheer intuition, as I don't know jack from computer tech. Tomorrow, Grumpy and I will go forth to purchase a new machine. But I don't know how to get my pics and vids and music offa the old one, without contaminating my new one. I already printed off all my stories and Grumpy's works files and so forth, but this is the first time in days and days that I could even get on the internet. Sheesh!

Sorry. Non booze related. I just home to the Pub.

I know a few things about computers, PM me the symptoms and I'll tell you if you can transfer your files or not.

If you're buying a new machine, drop the extra cash on an external hard drive.

Back up everything. Storage is cheap.

apple.com/store look for the "special deals" tag... buy refurbished Apple hardware. It's painless. I was a PC guy, built my first 8088 back in 1988... after a few years working w Mac @ work it was plain which OS was superior. Never looked back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Guys, I may take you up on that. Even though we have ordered a new tower, there's still tons of music and pics on this one. I am in shock and awe that I have been able to use the machine for so long tonight. I guess that computer guy did some good. I think I might have misunderstood some of his directions. He told me to do some thing called System Restore, or like that, and I thought he meant I only had to do it if I still had Malware. So I did it again tonight and it did not complete successfully, so I'm thinking maybe I was only supposed to do it once? Aargh, my head spins. The computer guy brought his toddler son with him, who was so cute, but he unscrewed all the knobs and pulls on my desk. Poor baby was so bored, as it took his daddy so much longer than the 45 minutes he was supposed to be paid for. I should go to some computer class, except that I don't think I'm smart enough to understand. After all, how many people know how to fix their modern computer-cars, or their TVs, or their phones? Technology has outgrown the average person. My father used to pull out the tubes on our TV, and we would cruise down to Thrifty Drug and he would hook them up to the tube tester. Can't do that kind of thing today.

In this age, really, these things are not fixed, they are just replaced by new ones. The only worry is indeed how to recover your valuable data from the old computer. Back-up, and back-up your back-up. External hard drives are so cheap these days, it would be foolish not to buy one or two and use them.

The easiest thing to do for you to protect those datas would be a) burn a DVD or two b) use an external hard drive.
