Cheapest of the cheap whiskies?

Postby KissMyPabst » Thu Jul 14, 2011 2:07 pm

What's the best rotgut for the money? I'm currently drinking a bottle of Philadelphia, the self proclaimed "Heritage Whisky." At $8.19 a liter here in NY, it's the best bargain around. Just wondering if there is something in a similiar price range with a bit more quality. I'm a bourbon guy, so I've spent plenty of time with Evan, Ezra, Old Crow and Ten High, but am looking for something new, and any cheap whiskey will do.

Thanks for the advice, folks.

The best of the bottom shelf Bourbon's I've found is Benchmark. It's made by the Buffalo Trace Distillery (Buffalo Trace, Bulleit, Sazerac) it's taste is most comparable to Grand-dad goes for $11-$12 a liter here.

I've seen EW green label for about $9 a liter. I think Kentucky Gentleman is $7 or $8 for a fifth. Pretty much anything in a plastic jug on the bottom shelf.

Old Crow is still my go-to, I've actually come to prefer it over some midshelf. I'll try the above suggestions too, thanks for the thread cheap bourbon is an american neccesity.

Can't find Benchmark around here, but I do always seem to buy it when I'm in Myrtle Beach. Shit, can't remember their label, but isn't it proclaiming something like "Old Number 8?" or some similiar JD knockoff. I'd like to say it's a solid bourbon, but I can't quite give an honest evaluation because I was always wasted and/or everything tastes better when you're on vacation. I'll have to keep my eyes open for it up here though.

You can get Beam Eight Star here in KY for about 7.50. It's not too bad and it gets the job done.

You can also expand the search to include blends. Once had a rough night on a plastic jug of Canadian Mist, which I think you can pick up for around $10 0r $12 a handle.

Now, personally, I consider the blends to be little more than brown vodka. But if you're looking for quantity over quality, you gotta make sacrifices.

Oh hell yes I love Old Crow. Great value for the cheap price. Very affordable, especially when I was low in dollar and needed some beverages right quik. Ten high I tried too, its like a dollar cheaper or so, made me hella throw up etc I hate ten high, Old crow is the best cheap whiskey in my book.

old crow is the way to go. Ten High is not that bad either, though I dont buy it anymore. it used to be a straight bourbon, but now it is a blend. i still have a half a fith in my bar that is straight.

I've yet to see Ten High in blended form.

The green label HH is just a few bucks more but lightyears better.

My vote goes for the 80 proof Very Old Barton. I'm not sure about the other proofs (there are three) or sizes, but the 1.75 is around under a double sawskie.
