Many of Bogart's movies have him drinking heavily; check out CASABLANCA (of course), IN A LONELY PLACE and THE BIG SLEEP. Who can forget Ray Milland in THE LOST WEEKEND? As someone above said, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? is one helluva drinkin' movie, one of the very best. I don't necessarily have to have a whole movie about drinking; I'm happy with a few good drinking scenes. Eli Wallach hittin' his flask in THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY. Nicholson drinking with Lloyd the bartender in THE SHINING. Karen Allen do shots in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is fantastic, as is Indiana Jones drinking with a monkey later in the same movie. REDS has some good scenes with Beatty, Nicholson, and Diane Keaton. A great drinking character is Sterling Hayden in THE LONG GOODBYE. And Dudley Moore in ARTHUR, of course. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty!

Although I should qualify that: I haven't seen that movie in like 20 years. I just remember by pre-drunkard self being transfixed by Peter O'Toole's ability to produce an endless supply of booze bottles from within his overcoat.

I just watched "the matador" with pierce brosnan last night. I was quite pleased with the way drinking was portrayed. It let the characters meet, let them open up to each other, and no real cautionary bits were thrown in- the whole thing was just decently lubricated.

Also a big fan of George Segal and Elliott Gould trying to buy one another a beer when they first meet in CALIFORNIA SPLIT; eventually they bond while trying to recall all of the Seven Dwarves, then swing out into the night singing "Rufus Rastus Johnson Brown." It's a rarely-seen early Robert Altman, but their friendship is one of the best I've ever seen on film. Oh--and Keith David and Kurt Russell sharing a slug of Scotch in the final scene of THE THING.

There isn't a lot of drinking in it but I always enjoyed seeing Troi get drunk on tequila in "First Contact". Kinda makes you feel good that all that kumbya future living with synthahol came courtesy of a scientist whacked out on the worm trying to get enough money to buy his own island with naked women.

Here's to you Cochran!
