I agree. A nice dark cave that few know that it even exists. Bars these days try to hard to be dance clubs, it's horrendous.

I don't even refer to that kind of place as a bar. It can be a "club" or something, but not bar. I also try to distinguish between pubs and bars. I like both, but they're different.

yeah, i hear ya. i'll occasionally see a spot in a basement or nook in a library or something and think, "what that joint needs is a bar." unfortunately, my shed is a piece of crap and totally full anyway, and we have no basement.

good luck, and let us know if you get one installed.

What's the difference between a "pub" and a "bar" ?

I would think of a pub as being different to a bar, but I can't really explain the difference. It is a cultural thing in the UK. A pub is less likely to play music, generally more likely to serve more local drinks. I would say though, that all pubs are bars, but not all bars are pubs

Pubs tend to balk at the idea of "I'll have a beer, and she'll have a mixed drink." To them, it's beer and neat/on the rocks only, barring a very select few cocktails.

To my thinking, bars are more like social "party" places, music loud and from a jukebox, but you can still talk and socialize. Pubs are more social joints were you can talk and any music comes from the patrons drunken songs, should that break out.
