The Three Greats

Postby Bounced » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:01 pm

I was somewhat shocked to learn that Jared Harris of "Mad Men" fame was the son of the great Richard Harris. Both marvelous actors, this brought me back to my deep and abiding affecting for the three greats in Cinema Drinking. Harris, O'Toole, and Reed. It was reading about Oliver Reed that I was dumbfounded to learn of his death. I knew he was dead, of course, but only knew that he died while filming "Gladiator". Here is his trivia bit from the Internet Movie Database:

He died of a heart attack in a bar after downing three bottles of Captain Morgan's Jamaica rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous doubles of Famous Grouse whiskey and Hennessy cognac, and beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling. His bar bill for that final lunch time totaled 270 Maltese lira, almost £450.

What a Drunkard! His interview clips on Youtube give you an inkling, but what a monumental way to go out. With celebrities these days engaging in drunk crotch-flashing and car-wrecking, it makes me wonder if there is room left in this world for the sort of ol' school Drunkards that Papa would have been proud to drink with.

"Papa" was actually pissed at Spenser Tracy for being in the bag and holding up filming for old man and the sea, calling him all sorts of names and such. So much for drunken comeraderie, so to speak.

Oh, do get over it. I didn't see the word "Grumpy" anywhere herein, but you don't see me bitching about it, do you?

Try singing it. After singing it, you'll understand why he couldn't take it.

Judge, I was referring to the three English greats. The triumvirate of scallywags. Robert Shaw is probably just as upset as the omission, as Gleason is.

And, they renamed the bar after him.

Going back to Rooster's original topic, there is an excellent graphic novel, available, called Hellraisers, which is all about the drinking fun had by Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Oliver Reed and Peter O'Toole. It's a damned fine read. You can get it from here (an altogether more ethical outfit than Amazon) or, better yet, head out to your nearest independent bookstore and order it through them.
