Have not had the pleasure. Looks a tad sinister for an 80-proof whiskey, which is a good thing.

Also, irrelevantly, i find that my favorite vodkas are distilled from corn.

looks pretty good. Had rum aged in unoaked barrels and it was exquisite. How much for a bottle?

The naming of this product fairly screams, "I double-dog dare you, frat boy!"

I haven't really enjoyed most of the "commercial moonshine" brands that have come out recently. To me, they just taste like super-cheap, harsh tequila. Also, I went to a party recently where they had a super soaker loaded with Georgia Moon corn whiskey and some got in my eyes. Not really the whiskey's fault, but still unpleasant.

Not to diss this particular white whiskey (and if you're buying I'm flying), but the companies marketing "legal shine" must be LTFAO. The majority of Americans have never tasted real moonshine but, since "everybody knows" that it's harsh tasting and rough drinking (in reality, some is some isn't), all that these distillers have to do is keep from blinding or killing anybody and they can pretty much sell whatever swill they think they can get away with. What a friggin' scam.

Right you are. Similar to vodka, it requires no aging, so there's no lead time or storage costs. Hence, barriers to entry are so low that everyone wants a piece of the action.

So, moonshine is the same as white whiskey? I thought there was a difference but there's a lot of shit I don't know. It says it's finished in uncharred barrels to meld the spirit's unique flavors. It states that they use an 80/20 ratio of wheat to barley in the mash, which is why i thought it was more like an unaged wheat whiskey.
Also it says:"the palate is unmistakably whisky: a smooth double-distilled varietal with vanilla, chocolate covered raisin, and dark cherry flavors." But hey, they'll say anything to get suckers to buy it.
Cost $34.10, by the way.

That price, for 750ml of a 40%abv, barley-aged whiskey, speaks volumes. PT Barnum and WC Fields must be having a chortle over this one.

Technically, by definition, there is no "legal moonshine". But from what (admittedly little) I've read about what is today being marketed as "white whiskey", the implication is that it's (elbow nudge, wink-wink, hint-hint) "legal" shine.

This quote, taken from the link below it, sheds some light on the confusion:

"The thing is, though, white whiskey has more in common with vodka and Everclear than backwoods white lighting. Moonshine is illegal liquor. Because it’s illegal, there are no standards for making it, so moonshine can be made from anything. Whiskey, even white whiskey, must contain a certain percentage of corn or grain; it must be taxed and regulated; and it is very much legal. But legal is boring. Moonshine is exciting. And if you’re a distiller trying to sell the public a new product that doesn’t taste very good, you need exciting on your side."

I guess there's really only one way to find out, Thirsty, m'lad...you gotta suck it up and take one for the team. Btw...let us know how it chugs.

This can't be shine, because they dilute the proof (probably with water). Moonshine typically runs about 190 proof.

That dilution would be like taking a 7Up, cutting it down with water and calling it a Zima.

Exactly, if I'm gonna drink White Dog / White Lightning / White Whiskey / Moonshine yadda yadda, it better be more than 80 fucking proof. It's supposed to be Moonshine for cryin' out loud.

It runs about $33USD, I'll pass.

Agreed. I'm not hopping on this bandwagon. I pay good money for bourbon that is aged more than the legal minimum. If the distillers want to save themselves the cost of barrels and warehouse space, I want to see some of that savings passsed on to me. On the other hand, maybe making the white dog palatable will require making better distillates to start with and will lead to better whiskey down the road, which would be cool.

Went to the Death's Door website (they should hand out Mickey's ears with each visit). They claim that this stuff distills out as high as 160 proof (80%abv) but then the trail to the answer as to how/why it becomes only 80 proof in the bottle disappears immediately after.

http://deathsdoorspirits.com/pages/spirits/spirits.php/

Will say it again...this stuff is for frat boys and hipsters who haven't yet been weened from daddy's credit card and wanna believe they're living dangerously.
