There's some good 40% abv bourbons out there, and the WT 81 may well find it's place within them, but the stated niche-marketing strategy seems a bit corporate-driven, as opposed to sheer good whiskey-driven, IMHO.

That Old Ezra 101 looks tasty.

I'll tell you what. Bought a bottle of WTRB and it tastes sort of ... exotic? Just a very different character than what I'm used to. I've only had WT101 once before. Just a couple shots. I really enjoy WTRB though. Very different from EWSB or BT.

At my old elementary school/parish, for the summer pinics, they used to make the iced tea in old former bourbon barrels. It was some damn fine tea that the Schumm clan made.
They meerged parishes, my old one: Saint Dennis and the next nearest, St. Helen, as there aren't many RC's in these here parts, and the tea barrels disappeared. I went to the summer picnic this year and the tea wasn't as good. Fried Chicken was though.

When we'd be raising a new pole building or harvesting the late summer glenberries, there'd always be a pitcher of uncut whiskey available to sustain the menfolk in their labors.

I frequently remember the Elevenses lasting until four or five the next afternoon.

picked up a bottle of "Clarke's 1866 old kentucky straight sour mash bourbon whiskey" in a euro discount supermarket chain (ALDI) for £10.99,- 40%abv - tastes ok for cheap whiskey, better with a bit of water than neat though there's nothing too harsh about it. supposedly made by Clarkes distilling Co,in lawrenceburg kentucky. wondered if anyone in the US had heard of it, or whether it might be an export only label (Works out at around $17 for 70cl)

I haven't heard of it, but I'm not in KY. The thing about exports only, you might be drinking Beam, just with a different label on it. Apparently, American Whiskey is on the upswing - and with that, there is some fuckery afoot.

Last weekend, I was drinking a 9 dollar bottle bottle of Whiskey, and it was Beam Black - just in a different bottle (Beam Black sells for about 23 bucks for a 750ml).

I'm not sure I trust Beam Global anymore, and Diageo is suspect. Strange times.

i just died a little inside.

never heard of it, either, and a quick google search shows a dude in turkey talking about it, supporting tbc's theory of export-only.

It does look like a re-label, and the aldi chain don't do any known brand spirits
Image

there's four roses or wild turkey both located in lawrenceburg, so maybe its one of theirs. can't see why they'd re-brand 'cause over here most people would only buy jack, or maybe beam as its what they know, but aldi is spread all over western europe & uk so maybe its cheapness & widespread availability beats the big brand marketing $$$

they also do a 12yr old single malt for £16.99 under their glen marnoch label, which is apparently a re-labelled dalmore, part of the white & mckay group, so its not just bourbon. ( I read that the 12yr dalmore was re-launched in 2008, so perhaps part of the betch was substandard & sold off to aldi to save their reputation......)
